CONTEXT is a visual and performative project that investigates the idea of context (from the Latin con-texere = weaving together, intertwining) as the set of circumstances that define an event: a reflection on the continuous relationship of the elements that constitute it, in a continuous adaptation of the founding principles and the conditions that generated it.

Intended as a fabric, or a non-random aggregate, the context is understood as a structured organism of simple elements interacting with each other. The artist imagines it not as a rigid grid but as a "mesh", a mobile space of interconnection in which infinite relationships and infinitesimal differences between the elements make continuous ramifications emerge; a fabric without a center or border, a space of semi-organized anarchy, a tangle of irregular density made of textures in which spaces and neighborhoods alternate.

Starting from these assumptions, the need emerges for the artist to activate a visual and performative research process on the relationship between primary structures and complexity.

The starting point is the geometric figure of the triangle, which is used as a primary unit to divide the stage space into geometric and regular cells: a modular structure composed by a series wooden triangles positioned in the space and/or manipulated by performers. These triangular units form a network that becomes a narrative, aesthetic and performative model that invites the contemplation of seriality, rhythm, incompleteness.

The artist's intent is to operate a geometric and discrete approximation of space that allows us to observe the triangle at the same time as a unit and as whole – both reductive and expansive.

To create his work the artist uses triangles, ‘two’-dimensional objects whose two faces are respectively black and white. Like a “bit”, to which it can be associated with two values 0/1, the triangle becomes a module, a small unit of information. If repeated in space, in their different white or black positions, the triangles become strings of binary code which, like inside a matrix, are configured as synecdoche: a minimal constructive unit that refers to the whole.

The work is constructed in a total executive cleanliness, through a modular geometric structure composed of a series of black and white triangles, manipulated and recombined by the performers in a series of variations within a system of combinatorial and movement rules that determine their execution. What derives from this, is a matrix made up of space-time points, a visual and performative texture where the performers are intended as manufacturing bodies, capable of being vehicles of variable and discontinuous energies and of combinations and permutations of the context.

In CONTEXT, everything is interconnected and, to quote Timothy Morton, “every entity seems strange. Nothing exists completely by itself, and so nothing is fully itself ”.

CONTEXT research and production process, funded by the European project Be SpectACTive, is built through a spatially and temporally distributed path between 2019 and 2021 in various international artistic residences in Europe, the United States and Canada. The world premiere of the project is set for July 2021 in Sansepolcro within Kilowatt Festival, leader of the European project.
