The Accidental Contingencies of Mutation is a performance and research project that expands Alessandro Carboni’s ongoing reflection on the relationship between cartography, the body, and space—shifting the focus from the urban landscape to matter itself, seen as a territory to be explored. The stage is no longer a flat map, but a deep landscape where matter—vibrant and alive—reveals its accidental, mutable, and discontinuous nature. If in previous works the artist examined the city as a layered, ever-changing system, here he turns his analytical gaze toward matter, investigating its transformations, temporary configurations, microscopic vibrations, and sudden shifts in state. Matter becomes an active agent, an energetic field crossed by invisible forces, where nothing is fixed and everything is in transformation. Adopting a method inspired by scientific research, Carboni explores matter on both molecular and macro scales, seeking to represent what escapes immediate perception. Objects dissolve from their original forms to become “things”: abstract presences, devoid of function, presented as open-ended possibilities. The project unfolds through a series of Expeditions—field research practices combining scientific observation and artistic experimentation: from microscope work to geological, volcanic, and sedimentary phenomena. In these explorations, the performative body encounters matter, absorbing its tensions, disintegrations, and metamorphoses, making visible the forces that traverse it. The Accidental Contingencies of Mutation is a descent into the depths of matter—into its generative chaos—where form is only a passage, a momentary interruption in the continuous flow of change.
