Metodo Materia – Artistic Practices around the Performativity of Matter is an innovative educational method developed by Alessandro Carboni, designed to integrate visual and performative composition into educational pathways for children aged 3 to 11. The method is based on the interaction between body and matter, encouraging children to explore the properties of materials through movement and space, with the aim of developing cognitive, motor, and sensory skills. The MM is grounded in the approach of serious play: a structured form of play aimed at learning. Widely supported by educational research, this approach fosters creative thinking and promotes the acquisition of transversal skills through experiential processes. During the activities, children are invited to investigate the relationships between materials and their physical characteristics (weight, shape, texture), exploring how these elements can be used to create forms, movements, and artistic compositions. A key aspect of the method is its focus on experiential learning, which encourages children to “think with their hands” (tinkering) and to solve problems creatively. The interaction between body and matter, mediated by movement in space, provides a practical framework for developing motor coordination and spatial perception skills, as well as enhancing body awareness (proprioception). To facilitate the application of the method in both formal and informal educational contexts, the program is supported by the Game Sheet, a pedagogical tool that guides teachers in planning, monitoring, and assessing activities. Through this tool, teachers can structure experiences that foster divergent thinking and peer cooperation, while promoting an interdisciplinary approach to learning.MM offers an educational proposal that integrates art and pedagogy, providing an innovative approach for the holistic development of the child.
