ABQ – Mechanical Extension in Four Arithmetic Operations is a solo dance piece created during a creative residency at the School of Drama – University of Calicut in Thrissur, Kerala (India), between March and July 2006. The project unfolds as an exploration of Samuel Beckett’s Quad, taking as its starting point the concept of “zero” and its dual nature: origin and erasure, generation and dissolution. Within this framework, “zero” becomes a choreographic principle, a center around which movement structures are generated, multiplied, and ultimately undone. The research draws upon the mechanics of South Indian classical dances, reshaped into a vocabulary of precise instructions where time, space, and gesture are calculated with almost mathematical rigor. The solo interrogates the number as a compositional device, no longer a mere formula but a new alphabet capable of expressing the force and potential of numerical structures in performance.
